CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Lauren

“Just one more!” Miguel held up a single finger. “Come on, it’s on me!”

Giggling into her near-empty margarita, Lauren smiled. “I can’t! I’m already late!” She slurped at the ice and sucked down the last of the celebratory lime-infused tequila at the bottom of the jumbo glass. “Mitch is going to be so mad!”

His brow furrowed. “Why? We got great news today!”

If it’s such great news, then what’s up with this pit in my gut?

Leaning forward, his hand covered hers with a gentle squeeze. “Doesn’t he know tonight is a celebration?”

Lauren eyed his long, tanned fingers resting on her skin and pulled away, slumping back into her seat as her stomach dipped. Her gaze lifted to the slowly darkening sky on the outdoor patio of the restaurant as the alcohol slowed her brain into a fog. The salt from the ocean scented the air, infusing with the delicious smells of the Mexican delicacies on the menu.

“Come on. You know if you go home right now, you’re going to end up watching a basketball game you don’t even care about,” he pressed, raising a hand to the waiter. “Two more please,” he muttered.

The waiter nodded and stepped away as Lauren grinned. “You know Mitch well, don’t you?”

“No. But I know you.” A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “And I know you’d rather be here celebrating and making plans for the future of Pier Ninety-Two than sitting at home on a couch drinking beer with a basketball game on.”

We were supposed to start a Lord of the Rings marathon tonight.

Heat pummeled her cheeks, reddening her skin. “I mean, the Lakers are in playoff contention—”

“Lauren.” Miguel held up a hand. “You know neither of us cares about basketball, the Lakers, or whatever the hell their chances are at snagging a place in the playoffs. Come on. Text Mitch and tell him you’re staying out with me to celebrate that big check you just got.”

That big check I just got...

Miguel leaned back in his seat as the waiter returned with two more frozen lime margaritas. “I promise, I’ll make sure you get home safely,” he added, pushing the new drink in her direction.

Her heart hammered in her chest, loyalty and love for Mitch battling with the desire to stay and indulge with Miguel. As she dropped her gaze to her lap, music blared from the outdoor speakers and the twinkle lights above their heads popped on, illuminating the growing darkness.

I could repay my parents for their loan with that check.

The table rocked as Miguel bopped in his seat, swaying to the new tune. He grinned and sipped from his straw as his dark-brown eyes came alive with the prospect of fun.

The margarita dizzied her mind, blurring her brain with indecisiveness. Miguel smiled from across the table, his sweet friendship and unfailing companionship embedded in every crease of his lips. His gaze bore into her, reminding her of the relationship they shared—growing over time through the ebbs and flows of it all.
